Newmarket Street and the top end of Frog Lane looked to have been a lovely area to live then. Though later in the 1960s and when it was still like as in the photo I had gone along there, but hadn't given a thought as to that, but at that time most areas were still pretty decent.

Wigan looking it’s best then. Not just for the Queen either that’s how it used to look with it’s up market housing.

Ron, this picture has really got me stumped, you have given the location but I can’t place any of them.
Excellent photo though.

Colin, the side entrance to 'Wigan Tech' near where THE WHEEL now stands. I was behind the photographer 10 yards from the Queen that day together with lots of other TLS lads,

If my memory serves me right I think the man to the right of the mayor with the wig was Alan Royle (not sure of his title but a legal man)

Colin. if you walk from the Market Place to the bottom of Market St. and turn left into Frog Lane, this building is immediately on the right. I think it is currently the section of the college for Catering courses and includes a pre -bookable public restaurant . The three storey buildings opposite were flats and , when I passed recently they had all been all boarded up., presumably awaiting demolition.

Gordon
Allan Royle was Town Clerk. He was awarded the C.B.E. in 1969.

Chief Constable Paul Foster in his ceremonial uniform, saluting at the kerbside.
The saluting officer standing behind the mayor looks like David Aitken, Paul Foster's deputy, and Chief Constable from 1957 to 1968.
