This is a re post of Ron's photo and I think worthy of more comment. It shows the Market Place entrance to the Fleece Yard and perhaps the tiled floor Cyril remembers is still there. The gated entrance is now a doorway next to Poundland.

Peter, thanks for posting this picture but I am still at a complete loss as to its location. I cannot think of any doorway like this and there is no Poundland in the Market Place?

Apologies, I mean Pound Bakery.

Struggling to place this, thought that poundland was in the grand arcade and that the old one was on Market st and had been demolished as part of the Galleries

There is a doorway between the Pound Bakery and the Natiowide but it is nothing like the picture. Didn’t it used to be the entrance to the bus office?
If it is in that location it must have been completely demolished before that row of mock Tudor building were built 1905 / 1906.
It would be amaze me if any of the original floor survived but would like to be proved wrong.

I hadn't seen this one before Peter, so thank for posting.
The doorway is still there Colin and likely used for the entrance to the offices above the shops which was chambers for a firm of solicitors, I've no idea if the solicitors are still there or even the mosaic tiled floor adorned with Fleece Hotel, but the doorway or entry was separate to the door for the bus office. Also I don't think the frame is that wonderfully ornate now with the shop fronts having been modernised, hopefully I could be wrong and I haven't noticed or maybe it's just been covered over.

I said that I would like to be proved wrong, and I am!
Just had a coffee with my brother and he says he remembers going in The Fleece in the 1960's. Main entrance is where you say it is and there was a side entrance onto Market Street. The picture above must have been the building that predates the current.
As you say Cyril, this leads to a firm of Solicitors, 'Stock Moran Swalwell'. I tried to go inside but no one was available. Immediately behind the glass door is a staircase leading to the firs floor, I took a picture but doubt that is of any value.

Ron just sent me some great pictures of the Fleece Hotel, the main building was on Market Street, demolished to make was for the ramp that went up to the new Marketgate Centre. What a loss this was.
The entrance from the Market Place must have been a secondary entrance along a corridor.

Peter instead of reposting the image, you should use the existing image and comment on that. There now two of the same image with comments split between them both.

The Market Place doorway to the Fleece still said "Fleece Hotel" on it until the 1990's when it was altered.

Ron, your excellent photo and comment of 2007 I thought needed reviving, with all the changes taking place. It had one comment in 2007 and one in 2015 and if I had commented there, nobody would have seen it and the recent interest would not have occured Apologies for any offence I have caused you.
