The Pony Dick soup committee set up when Pemberton miners were locked out for 4 months in 1893. The miners were told that their pay was being decreased by 25% and when they refused to accept this they were locked out.

Times were hard, people were very hungry. The Pony Dick soup doesn't sound very appetising, but given the circumstances, much needed nutrition provided by the kitchen folk was surely received with gratitude. God bless whoever funded the soup kitchens during the difficult times of 1893.

I have read books on the 1890s and the lock outs at the pits.It was devastating for people with young families.

Fortunately the Pony Dick soup commitee of Pemberton managed to dish up, for the colliery workers dependants. No doubt members from other districts were also going short during the dispute of 1893, as it was a general lockout.
