Anyone know the School or location or other kids? Was it a school trip, all kids have coats, adult does not.
- year approx 1919
- The only child I know is Ken Orrell (born 1912), front row 3rd from left, slightly behind, arms folded with tie.
- Around this time he moved from Lower Ince to Wigan, 45 Delph Street.
- One suggestion WOODFIELD (OLD) School. which did not have heating so could be why kids in coats, and not far from Delph St. Some pics here on WW:

That substantial building has the look of a grand house or manor and those young lads are surely from a working class background. An afternoon out perhaps?

Great photo and intriguing. Would the fact that two of the boys seem to have a small suitcase be a clue?

That building looks very much like Haigh Hall. Same stonework and windows.

I remember being at the old Woodfield school in 1944/45. It was a large mansion type house . There was a recent photo showing some of the frontage of the house on Album.

I think Haigh Hall has gravel up to the walls all the way round. I don't think this is stonework - it looks like rendering (stucco), and I think it looks too dilapidated to have been Haigh Hall. Perhaps one of the lost Wigan halls?

Compare the stonework and windows with the two windows at the back of the car on this photo.
Exactly the same place.

John Walsh's Mate, interesting:
Not exactly the same but very similar, perhaps a different place on the building, or just another building in the same style.
BUT where is it? Looks like the original link is to LEP (Lancashire Evening Post) but I can't find it on their site.
A google picture compare of your link suggests Haigh Hall

Hi Jim, It reminds me of Strickland House in Standish as you know.I remember tall windpws opening onto the lawn.Behind those windows was a large “entertaining room” with a parquet floor like a dance floor.I am pretty sure of that.

Dave, just checked my old pics and Strickland house seemed to be mostly brick.
P.S. I think Ken now went to Standish Grammar (as all age junior) before Wigan Grammar when a bit younger. Will email you when I get more info.
