I played with Haigh in the early seventies. I also worked with Charlie Rushworth (front row far right) at Patsonage Colliery. He was a fantastic cornet player and a pretty good darts player as well.

That should have read Parsonage Colliery

Does anyone know of Wilf Gill, his sons Wilf and Bill (I think) These were my grandmas sister's family. I think one of them played the big drum.

Comment by: Cyril Ashurst on 5th April 2010 at 22:22

Billy Gill is the fourth from left on the front row just behind the drum.

I had the great pleaure in hearing the band as a young teenager. Mr Bentham the conductor tuaght me to p lay the trombone at Aspull County Secondary School. The Haigh Band had a really good trombone section. Gordon Clough on Solo Trombone, Lot Birkett on Second and Peter Gill on G Bass Trombone. I knew several of the players including Cyril Ashurst. What a great band!!

My father, Tommy Pilkington, is front row, centre, behind the large trophy. He played tenor horn. I have many fond memories of Friday night rehearsals upstairs in the pub in New Springs. I think it was called Rosie's. Also going on a coach to all the competions & helping mum in the ?drill hall, when they were hosting the completion. Wigan walks were the most fun as child. Memories of Faith of our father's,played by mass bands, gosh- sends a shiver down my spine. Sadly lost dad 2002, but he went out with some good sounding brass band music.

Maureen, the pub was the Royal Hotel. It was my grandparents place Hugh and Rose Owen.

The photo was taken at armistice. Incorrect. John Turner; back row far left sadly passed away in September 1960 and did not play in the band that year. I think the photo was taken at St John’s walking day in 1959. Three of the unidentified players are, back row, John Seddon, kneeling Norman Bibby and Joe Goulden. Information supplied by Keith Hollinshead
