Top left, can't re-call ever seeing no entry signs in Market St. Hindley.
Think you're correct dave, must be top of town where Grand Arcade entrance is now.
Waring and Gillow, top of Station Road.
Try Market Place, junction with Millgate and Station Road.
The shop with the orange sign was the GMT 'Saver Seven' office on the corner of Millgate and Market Place, where you could buy bus and rail passes. This probably dates the photo to the late 1970s.
Looks like a May Day walk. Gotta be town centre, Wigan!
Yes, Waring and Gillow at the bottom of Millgate, where the Grand Arcade begins now. If the camera which took the photo had swung to the left, it would have captured Woolworth's.
Definitely Wigan Market Place and probably late 70s or early mid 80s.
Wigan Parish Church Walking Day - was usually on the 1st Sunday in July
Thanks Brian, absolutely love walking day pictures. A time that brought people together, plus a wonderful and special childrens day.
I think this is around 1973, remember the cork healed shoes that I soooo wanted and can be seen on a few of the girls
The Wigan boutique shop was Peter Pells tailors in 1968
Can't be as early as 1973 Betty, because the saver sales shop on the corner of Millgate in the picture only opened some time after Autumn 1977.
Before that time the building was occupied by an employment agency called Brook Street Bureau.
It's Millgate. See item number 26020.
