With regard to the photo of the WW1 gravestones at Wigan Lower Ince cemetry, this is a photo, supplied by the family and published in the Wigan Observer on the 2nd Oct 1915, of my grandfather Reuben Jennings. He is commemerated on one of these memorial stones.
Is anything known within the family about the circumstances of his burial, or concerning the eventual erection of the headstone? Were the family notified that the headstone was to be moved recently?
unfortunatley, i know very little about when the stone was erected or about his burial except that times must have been very hard as other deaths in the family at that time were also buried in common graves. i do remember the stones being turned around recently and i am pleased that they are now better looked after with small shrubs being planted around them. Reuben would have been one of Kitcheners volunteers as he was 37 years old when he joined the Border regiment.
