Very much short lived Mick, Where was it printed and published and who was the proprietor?
Colin - it was a broadsheet consisting of four pages, much of which were given over to advertising and serial stories. Each issue hald about one page of news - both local and further afield.
The only info I can find re ownership etc, is the following notice on the rear page of each issue:-
"Printed for and published by The Wigan Star and Advertiser Company, at their offices, 31 King St, Wigan, in the County of Lancaster".
Wasn't the Wigan Examiner offices in King Street? Could this have been the fore runner of that paper?
Fred - the Wigan Examiner was already in existence (first published in the early 1850s), and their office was between the Court cinema and the corner of King St and Rodney St.
The business address given for the Wigan Star (31 King St) is on the opposite side of the street; either in the 'Turnkey building' or next door to it - Alker & Ball solicitors now occupy numbers 29 to 33 King St.
Just had a book dealers list and he has a bound volume of THE WIGAN STAR for sale at £100
Ron - if that's the list published by a certain Blackpool dealer, I am now the owner of that book.
That's saved me some money then<g> I already have a bound copy of old 19th century Observers...
The Wigan Examiner was based at 62 King St, it was founded by the Renick family in 1852, the paper ran until June 1961. Many of the employees went to work for the Wigan Observer at Rowbottom Square.
