That must be Howorths D I Y or Iron Mongers on the other corner of Molyneux Street. The old Scholes Ex-Service Mens Club(Legion}on far right with the arch windows with white bit's .Great photo John of Scholes long time gone.
I agree, great photo, allows our old grey cells to be reminded of scenes from our childhood.
Been informed by my Mam that it's not the Legion the building with the arch windows, that's a house that a girl by the name Peggy Oldcroft lived with her parents. The club was next building going up after an entry.
I think the macklay's used to live in house on the right, they probably "belonged" to St Cats as Peggy was buried from there a few years ago. The alleyway at the side of there house used to lead up to mint court. There were Hankins living up there as well.
The building is where Peggy Holcroft lived. Peggy married Vincent Mackley and they had two daughters, Susan and Maureen Mackley. The British Legion was on the other side of the alley way. Mr.Woods had the paper shop next door to us. It was Paula and Joe Howard who had the hardware shop at the corner of Molyneux Street. It was lovely to see this photograph. I remember John Hankin and Brian Perry well. The walking days at St. Catherines were always a day to remember. Everyone turned out to watch.
Yes my dad's family lived in Mint Cottage until forced compulsory purchase in the early/mid sixties forced them out. My Granddad Ernest, Grandma May, dad Alan, Uncles Ernest and William and Aunties, Edna, Lilian and Olive as well as numerous cousins. I enjoyed many hours at their small holding where Granddad kept chickens, pigs and the occasional horse. Great days. I remember Howard's as well they moved into Liverpool Road, Hindley. Paula was a lovely lady.
There is a thread on Mint Terrace on places, I have bumped it back to the top. It would be good if people associated with the area could add some extra information.
Best Regards to all.
Peggy Mackley - Holcroft was my dads cousin . Great picture
