More carriages than we get these days. Bet the coaches don't resemble a troop transporter. Tried getting on the train to Manchester on Saturday recently? By the time it gets to atherton the passengers can't get on. will the train companies ever take any notice?

I think you'll find that it was Hilda Ogden. She travelled daily from Southport to Manchester.

Trans-pennine units worked through Kirkham and St Annes to Blackpool South in the evenings, passing St Annes at 6 pm. I lived just down from St Annes station at the time, early 70s, and rushed tea to watch it non stop through the station. I never saw it return, not sure if it stopped in Blackpool overnight for early morning return. I travelled on many in the early 80s between Manchester Pic and Sheffield and Doncaster, excellent ride, those were the days.

Are you sure it is a train from Southport? Peaks usually worked Liverpool to Manchester.
