I think these old steam railway photos are wonderful.
A similar view to this one can be seen in a fabulous painting by the local artist Chris Holland. The painting is entitled Wigan Wallgate Departure and can be viewed at

In 1948/49 my mother used to take my sister & myself from Wallgate Station to Victoria & then see us off onto another train from Picadilly to Buxton. One time there was a landslide somewhere on the track to Buxton & we were stuck for hours by ourselves in a carriage & it was dark before we got to Buxton....no mobile phones to say what had happened & that we were ok.
