My mum told me my grandad took her to see this oin Wigan town centre. - It was particularly poignant as one of the German aircrew that bailed-out had parachuted into her dads farm field (now Hindley High school playing field). She and her sister discovered the shivering and petrified airman and gave him a treacle butty and a cup of tea. He was very grateful and gladly accompanied my grandad to the police station the next morning!
My grandfather WM Baines was Home Guard and ARP for Wigan and I have a photo of him with Home Guard pals looking at what now appears now I have enlarged photo to be a flying hat that they have found.I wonder if this is related to the Luftwaffe pilot who baled out of this plane.?
