Interesting badge, and it's story. LURRY must be Wiganese for LORRY. I also have my Fathers ARP lapel badge, plus a miniature one, both are hallmarked silver.
"A SLEEPY DRIVER.— James WHALLEY was charged at the Ashton County Police Court, on Wednesday, with being asleep in charge of a horse and lurry at Audenshaw, on the 15th. Defendant pleaded not guilty. A constable deposed to "boarding" defendant"slurry and finding him asleep. Witness rode several yards on the curry and took charge of the reins and then awoke the driver. Fined 5s 6d and costs."
The lurry was a large horse drawn cart, my great, great grandfather who originated from Little Milton, Oxford, was a carter and lurryman there, then in Wigan.
Great badge.
Thanks for the comments, its good to hear different stories.
My great grandfather John Kelly was the founder of the Manchester and Salford Carters and Lurrymen's union circa 1898 in Salford. I am trying to find out ancestral info of him, and his union activities. Having already seem articles in various Manchester newspapers from that era, re: union meeting around the country, I have recently located 4 badges at the WCPM in Salford, but the badges are from Bolton. If anyone has any info about these badges, .or the union, please feel free to email me. Thank you
