Is that the old stand that burned down at Springfield Park or the one at Central Park opposite the Douglas Stand.
What a tragic end to The Borough for the sake of a few quid.
Colin, I never knew that Wigan Borough played any matches at Central Park, but in any case, the stand on the popular side you refer to (replacing the old "Dutch Barn") was only built in 1954.
Thanks John.
Wigan Borough nickname The Green Linnets, folded in 1931 so clearly this picture predates this.
At the time Springfield Park had a capacity of 30,000 and of course other sports were played there Trotting for example.
I still think the stand in the background looks too large for Springfield Park but I may be wrong or it could be an away game????
I am sure there is someone out there with the answer.
PS, I wonder what Billy Dickinson would have made of us discussing his picture nearly 100 years later, or our comments 100 years hence?
All this has been done previously. This is Springfield Park around 1926. The stand is the one that burned down in 1953

Thanks Bert, the stand seems much larger than I imagined it would have been. What would Billy have made of the Latics being in the Premier League and Winning the FA Cup, the mind boggles!
