Wigan took part in a short tour of France just after the war, they played Lyon and Roanne in May 1948. This team played Roanne and part of the French newspaper is shown, my father Jack Bowen brought it back with him.

Roanne was as far south on the French canal system that we reached with our narrow boat. It is the terminus of the Roanne - Digoin Canal, which runs above the valley of the Loire. The terminus basin is massive - and full of large pleasure boats, all between 3 and 4 metres wide, and up to 20 metres long. You paid for your mooring by length - and our boat is just under 14 metres, but only 2 metres wide. When it came to paying, the Capitain of the port looked at our boat, and looked at how expensive it would be for us, and decided it was hardly fair for us to pay the same as a boat twice our width... so our boat suddenly shrank by 4 metres in length. A few capitains did similar over the years.
The French have a lovely way with rules and regulations.

I remember Carcassonne playing at Wigan soon after the War and Perpignan, I think
