A photo, posted a few years ago on this site, of the Wigan RFC team that played in the Billy Atkinson Benefit match. The mayor is photographed with the team, he was Samuel Wood JP who was mayor in 1907 - 08 and 1908 - 09. I found a better photo of Samuel, so I included it at the side of this photo. On the Mayor's right is John Counsell who was a very faithful and long standing servant of the club until 1938.

Middle row, third "player" from the left is my great grandad, John Mitchinson. He was a leading light in the formation of the rugby club in tis early years and played, as did his son, for the club for many years. He also was a Wallgate publican for many years.

Yep - that's great granddad Mitch, often known as Jack. I got his Heritage Jersey - number 19:)

Jack Mitchinson was also my great Grandad ! (Im Evelyns Grandaughter)
There's quite a few of us, it was a large family!!.I had always been told by my nan and mum that Jack played for Wigan but it was all quite sketchy until my son looked into it from rugby point of view and found out he had played for Wigan for 16yrs prior to the split in1895 then carried on to play for Wigan for a number of years after, he was capped for Lancashire as well.

Yes! I am Billy’s daughter Mary’s daughter. We came to live in the US. In 1979. Mary died of cancer in 1990. She is buried with Billy & Susie. I also have a daughter Ashlee. I was sent some family history from my uncle Jimmy Billy’s son. I’d be happy to share if anyone wants to email me.

For Kathryn Culshaw. I loved Aunty Evelyn! I’m John Murphy’s daughter (Mary Mitchinson/Murphy’s granddaughter, so Evelyn’s big sister). I remember Ken Harrison too - him and my dad were in the Police together:) I have a good picture of them at a Police do:)
