Springfield terracing started

This is my last photo contribution to Latics' collection (All used up and now regretting throwing many away as well as programmes in a "clear out"!)
This photo shows the start of concrete terracing (a luxury after years of standing on sloping shale !) Me and my cousin Grenville Simm, (R.I.P.) a true blue, die hard Latics stalwart went along to "lend a hand" as it was all done by a hardy band of volunteers.
This game was between the top two in the N.Prem. league, hence the higher than normal attendance against a "one season" wonders team.

Great, great, photograph. What a atmospheric ground Springfield Park was. Never forgotten times captured here, forever.

Thanks Jarvo, nice to have my old photos of Springfield appreciated.I loved it at Springfield Park. I'm one of these "old Turkeys" who was brought up on Non League football. Started in 1954 and stuck with them through good times and bad. So many fantastic memories!

Ivor, you haven't named the opponents. 'This game was between the top two in the N.Prem. league, hence the higher than normal attendance against a "one season" wonders team.

Given the colours, was this not the FA cup 1st round against Port Vale?

I'm sorry to hear that this is your last Photo Ivor. All your photos have been good and full of interest. Like you I still miss Springfield Park, I was hooked from my first visit.

Come on Ticsmon, you know me from my previous posts! I've even given you two good clues;- it's a N.Prem Lge game and the opponents were really just "one season wonders"

I was present on the same afternoon that builder Arthur Wain poured the 1st lorry load of cement into the wooden mould. It was close to the side of the supporters club. A few yearlaterI was voted onto the committee of said club. As you say IvorI became a latic I 1959 in the old Lancashire combination days. Fortunately lately I can still remember lots of the old players names going back to goalie Jack Richardson. Oh for another strike force of Llewellin and my old Springfield hotel drinking mate Harry. Rip. Happy days

Love how the big Stand stands out. Watched my first game here in April 1959 when Everton were the opponents. Jeff Rourke gave me the Everton line-up and quite a bit more about that particular week, at Item 25289.

Got it in one Ticsmon !! You'll be glad to know there are no more photos to test you on, although I have to say, I've enjoyed the chats that they provoke!

To echo Geoff, I'm also sorry to hear that this is your last photo Ivor. They've been belters. I was at this game, straight from my cousins weeding suited and booted. Got my hand burned on the plate at the reception and finger queuing up to get on the ground and caught the bloke in front cig. Two blisters to remember it by.

Thank you so much Ivor for sharing your brilliant photos of latics. Loved them all and each one has captured the history of our wonderful club
