Bit of a handful this fella; 203 goals in 387 appearances. He was spotted while playing for New Springs FC. Having looked at old team photos of 'Borough FC, it seems quite likely that he's shown here wearing a green jersey with a large letter 'W' on its badge. Give it to Billy!
you woudnt damage your metatarsal in those boots
Philip Boro played in red shirts so I'm thinking it will be red?
I have a brand new unworn, pair of 1930's football boots. I saw them for sale in a local auction last year and I had to have them.
Was it Wigan Rovers that had a soccer ground , off Warrington Road, Newtown, a short distance from the Saddle.?. If correct. How long was the club in existence for?. I remember a soccer ground being there in the early sixties, and I seem to remember the club being Wigan Rovers.
Ron.
I've since had a look at the 'Historical Football Kits' site, and it shows 'Borough's 'Green jersey with black and white socks.' But I'm confident that the player shown here isn't wearing black and white socks, so I'll go for 'black socks with green and white tops.'
Oh, and don't be putting any Dubbin on those boots.
Wigan Borough played in red and white, green and black and gold during their league years. I remember it well!
On further thoughts, the socks shown here could be 'black with red and white tops' - the green strip had replaced the 'red and white halved strip.
There’s a retouched team photo on the Wigan Athletic Supporters club web site showing the kit as green jerseys and black socks with green and white tops.
Well-in! Keith. I must admit my assumption that Billy Dickinson could be wearing the previous season's 'red and white tops' was a bit 'rich.'
Yes Albert. Wigan Rovers did play there. I remember going occasionally if only to smell the bread from Rathbones. Or am I imagining now? Did they play in yellow and black?
Derek. One of the reasons I recollect it, is, one night I was on Newtown beat, and found a small rubbish fire smouldering near one of the buildings, in the grounds. To be on the safe side, I sent for the fire service, and they sorted ot out. No doubt it probably would have extinguished itself. I was amazed when I read the local paper, the next day. The football club’s authorities praising my actions.
albert i think it was also used in the ken gee cup
Looking closely, that ISN'T the Phoniex Stand in the background. But when was it built? Is that the original main stand? Or is this on an away ground?
Jarvo. There's a coloured team-photo available that shows the players wearing green jerseys, and the stand decked in red and white stripes. I'll go for Springfield'.
Boro started out in red and white halves, but then changed to green (they were nicknamed "The Linnets"). They then changed to black and amber hoops.
The info on Historical Kits comes from my research.
And any colourised photos you've seen will have been done by me. :D
The 'Kits site is nicely set, and made firm by your prolonged research George.
Continued thanks for fettling my School soccer team photo, a short while ago.
Springfield Park approx. 1926. The stand is the one that burnt down in 1953. Stand was built in 1921
