Dave was your grandad an Insurance man for the Pru? He came to our house every week or so in the 1950's and probably early 60's, He gave me a pile of old Wigan Rugby programmes from the 1940's and 1950's which I still have. I remember him as a nice man
Nearly Ron. He was a director for the Royal London. That's how he got the gig at WRL. The Royal London had a proxy seat on the board. My other link to WRL is my uncle Jack Winstanley was a Rugby League journalist. Also my uncle was Bill Atherton who captained Rochdale Hornets. Am I a Rugby fan. Nooooo. Not seen a live game since about 1969. Up the tics.
I knew it was one of the big insurance companies. Looks like I have the programmes you should have inherited <g>
Ron. You are very welcome to them. I have a loft full of WAFC programmes.
HI DAVE STEPHENS, I just wish to add one point about your uncle jack i used to have a cuppa every friday morning i think his wife's name is ELSIE? they used to buy meat from the mobile butcher's van J.J.MORRIS&SONS I was a butcher's lad just left school around 1962/3/4/onwards i think my mentor was a JOHN BENNET i think he knew them more or something but being a W.R.L. fan if Jack was in we would end up talking rugby They are a fantastic couple especially in winter looked forward to having 20 mins or so with a warm drink thats all cheers .
Got it wrong about Jim. He worked for the Royal London. He wasn't a director but Royal London had a proxy Directorship at WRL and my grandad Jim took on that role until he retired in June 1960. I have his retirement certificate in s frame but its sealed, and I dont want to break the seal, so it wont scan properly
Dave, I too have THOUSANDS of football programmes including Latics going back to the 1950's and one pre war one ( I specifically collect pre war football programmes and am trying to get one pre war programme from each League club. latest count is 67) I collected every pLatics programme since they came into the League up to a few years ago, when the programme became more of a magazine. You can't beat the old individual programmes from the 1950's and before. with the distinctive artwork on the cover.
