BRING BACK SPEEDWAY TO WIGAN...
A brilliant piece of Wigans sporting history, i had just turned 6 then. Thank you Ron.
Would this have been at the old Woodhouse Stadium which later became an Athletics Track. I vaguely remember being taken there by my Dad in the mid 1950's before it moved to Poolstock.
This programme was for the meeting at Norwich. There are programmes on the site from both the Woodhouse Lane and Poolstock tracks. Wigan Panthers rode at Woodhouse Lane and Wigan Warriors at Poolstock.
The track became a greyhound racing track later. My grandmother lived just in front of it and as kids we played on the track on many a Sunday.
Speedway was at Poolstock before Woodhouse Lane.
As an excited 6 year old I remember going to, I think, the Poolstock track to see my first and only speedway around 1946/47. My memory was of a large crowd and Tommy Price is a name I recall from that time but whether he competed there I have no idea.
B Brad yes they did, the programme and info. is on the site under WIGAN SPEEDWAY.
They had greyhound meetings at both tracks long before they had speedway. I think they had greyhounds and speedway at the same time at both places, obviously not on the same nights.
My dad was in the St Johns ambulance and he took me to the speedway, does anyone remember when you went in they give all the kids a bar of Wigan rock?.
When I went with my parents to Woodhouse Lane I would probably have only been 4 or 5 but one thing that I can remember is the smell of the fuel the bikes use.

Another gem Ron. Anyone know more about Jack Winstanley?
GW I seem to I remember Jack Winstanley was a protegy of the Harts Oliver and Ronnie He later ran a coal and haulage business in Horwich
GW I have just emailed his son to see if he has any photos, etc.
Cheers Ron and AB. I seem to recall he had a bit to do with the Yorkshire teams as well?
Forgot to say there is a photo of Jack on the site under Wigan Speedway
