Disallowed goal!
Disallowed goal!

Having just seen the Latics' fixtures on a previous photo, I noticed the "memorable" (for all the wrong reasons!) F.A.Cup replay against Tranmere. After enduring a blizzard part way through the match, the ref blew the whistle for full time a second before Alf Craig's shot hit the back of the net! Rumour had it that the ref had already booked his train for his return home, extra time meant that he would miss his train. (Apologies for photo quality as it's a newspaper cutting.)
Alf is on the right.

Referee admitted many years later that it was a goal and true about missing his train home after extra time !

Absolute disgrace. Alf Craig's winner should have stood. It just goes to show how non-league clubs were treated in those days, with Wigan Athletic being victims that cold winter night. History tells us of the injustices of the way the way the game was run. We look back in horror at the consequences...

Well i never iv'e never believed with any system and to be honest i can't recall this yet it was true!!
As we all know W.A. were always treated like that ,in fact the rumour was quote :: THEY f.a. NEVER FORGAVE WIGAN FOR PULLING OUT THE LEAGUE IN THE MIDDLE OF A SEASON. But if that ref is still alive the power's that be should publicly shame him and if he holds any trophies
they should be returned.

Edit: 'the way the game was run'. And it was an equaliser not a winner. :)

Wouldn't miss my train either for such a ridiculous game.Silly buggers.

Let me enlighten you Jim, the referee didn't miss his train. He did not allow the equalising goal from Alfie Craig, even though it was in the net before he blew for fulltime!

Oh my. Don't remember the world coming to an end due to it though. Possibly because only rugby mattered in Wigan, as it does now.
