When men were men...thing is with rugby men today, you wouldn't see their tattoos, so no showing off. I went to Asda the other night and one of my lady friends said while chatting, look at that chap over there wearing shorts on a cold evening, I said he's showing off his tattoos on his legs thats all.
Harry Street on the left, and Ken Gee with the ball.
I'm sure some enterprising advertising company could utilise this in a soap powder commercial<g>
Used to go with my grandad on a Saterday afternoons at times you did'nt know who was who but fantastic.
Harry Street did not play for Wigan in the 40s. I remember talking to Ken Gee when he had the Railway hotel and he told me about playing in a mud bath in Sydney and 3 months later they played test cricket on the ground.
I know it rains a lot but this isn't Wigan - it's Australia in 1950, the Sydney Cricket Ground. After record rain they spread 40 tons of top soil and then played the third and final test against Great Britain - the state of the players is long remembered rather than the result. Looks like Ken Gee with the ball, how anyone managed to hook the ball out of the scrum is anyone's guess.
Ron, what a brilliant photo. Those were the days.
Keith thanks for the updated info. That's the information I had, regarding the photo.
IIRC this was the match that they had to dig one player out of the mud. Again if memory serves me right, that player was Tommy Bradshaw.
Just a bit more info' Ron, there were 6 "Wiganer's" in the GB side, Ashcroft, Hilton, Cunliffe, Bradshaw, Gee and Egan. Harry Street played but only joined Wigan later in 1951, he was a Yorkshireman born in Castleford.
