The second leg of the 1944 Rugby League Cup Final, played at Odsal Stadium April? 1944. This shows the Wigan team that played that day in front of some 25,000 spectators. Wigan held a slender lead from the first leg played at Central Park but just couldn't hold on to it in the second leg.

Back row:- Jimmy Featherstone, Jack Bowen, Joe Egan, Johnny? Blan, Eddie Watkins, Ken Gee, Jack Maloney.

Front :- Harry? Belshaw, Hector Gee, Joe Jones, Johnny Lawrenson, Martyn Ryan, Ernie Ashcroft.

My father (Jack Bowen), Eddie Watkins and Joe Jones were the three Welshmen in the side, while the nucleus of the very successful side in the years just after the War was begining to come together with 7 Wigan born and bred players in the team, amongst them the relatively young Gee, Egan, Lawrenson, Ashcroft and Ryan. Most of them had played throughout the War years and this gave Wigan the opportunity to "hit the ground" running when peace time fixtures started up again.
