Wigan were the first winners of the Lancashire Cup in 1905 - 1906. It was won after a replay against Leigh 8 - 0. Bert Jenkins who I think is seated, second in from left and perhaps next to him with the ball is the other try scorer Jimmy Leytham. I think I recognise Dick Ramsdale (not in Cup team) who is standing 3rd person in from right on back row, first one is the Trainer Hesketh.
Johnny Thomas I believe is in the middle at the very front. The Cup winning team was ;-
Mason, Leytham, Jenkins, Jones, Lowe, Anderson, Thomas, Collier, Watkins, Vickers, Barton, Whittaker, Tyrer, Hilton, Moores - notice the game was still a 15 a side game. Ramsdale was at that time probably one of the two reserves, his time would come and Wigan were on their way, a "mere" 108 years ago!
My father recollected being greeted by Johnny Thomas, a fellow Welshman, when he first arrived in Wigan in 1938 to join the Club.
The caption of 1904 to 1905 on the photo cannot be correct according to the records. Frank Battersby (extreme left seated on ground) for example joined the club in 1906 - 07 and made just one appearance that year on April 1st 1907. The following year 1907 - 08 he made his most appearances for the club, just 12, and this seems the more likely year that the photo was taken. His total appearances were 14.
