I have just enlarged the photo and the ball under my fathers knee is indeed a rugby ball

Neither rugby union or league used substitutes as early as 1926.... so this is likely to be a union team . Rule out Orrell .... founded in 1927 , rule out Aspull founded in 47 . Not much left .... Wigan RUFC. ???

Wigan RUFC was founded in 1913 so could be that.
