Yes, it is Peter Higham, always well tanned! I also remember him for two cracking goals at Springfield Park, both with overhead kicks. (There weren't too many spectacular goals in those days!)

Ivor, I enjoy looking at your pics. of the 'Latics' and reading the info. concerning them.
Maybe you could also shed a bit more light on a game I attended c1958. The game was a friendly between the 'Latics' and Everton Reserves at Springfield Park, and I also remember scribbling a 2-5 final score in the match prog. Wish I'd have kept it now. Hope you can help, Ivor.

Is the number 4 for Latics the great Alan Brown?

Comment by: jcf on 24th June 2014 at 21:40

Peter's tan was obtained through his summer job. He was a lifeguard at Southport. John Higham his brother was a PE teacher in Wigan Schools in the 50's and 60's.

No 4 was Tom Brown (ex Swansea).
The Everton game was played on Monday 27th April 1959.
The score was 2-5 with Ken Twidle scoring both Latics goals.
The attendance was 3,500 and 4 guest players played for Latics including Les Campbell, then with PNE.
I think the game was part of the deal that saw wing-half John Bramwell move to Everton. He played in this game as did a certain Brian Labone.

Jeff, many thanks for the extra info. concerning the 1959 game between the 'Latics' and Everton Reserves. Two other Everton players whom I recall were Jimmy O'Neill and Jimmy Tansey.

Comment by: Jeff Rourke on 25th June 2014 at 11:24

Philip, The Everton side was Jimmy O'Neill, ALAN SANDERS, James Tansey, John King, Brian Labone, John Bramwell, ??? Blain, Alex Ashworth, Frank Wignall, Jack Keeley and ??? Gregory.
Sanders became Latics Manager in 1968.
After the Everton game, Latics played every day that week
Tuesday - drew 0-0 at Droylesden
Wednesday - lost 4-1 to Chorley in LJC Final at Blackburn
Thursday - lost 2-3 at home to Marine
Friday - lost 5-1 at Marine
On that Friday, Everton also became the first club in the world to install underground heating.
Also, 13 years to the day of the Everton game, Labone retired.

Jeff, continued thanks for naming the 1959 Everton Reserve side and also for the further info.
Great effort!

Is that the same Frank Wignall that went on to play for Forest

Comment by: Jeff Rourke on 27th June 2014 at 15:06

Dosco,
Yes , it is. He was at Everton for 5 years before joining Forest in 1963. He played for them until 1968 and later played for Wolves, Derby, Mansfield, Kings Lynn and Burton Albion. He then managed Qatar between 1975 and 1976.

Comment by: Dosco on 27th June 2014 at 17:44

Jeff, you don't half know your stuff. I remember Wignall in the same side as Terry Hennessey, Jim Baker and Joe Baxter.

Comment by: Dosco on 27th June 2014 at 21:34

Sorry, should have said Jim Baxter and Joe Baker.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone in this forum might be able to help me? I'm trying to find a match programme for my dad. Wigan Athletic v Wigan Rovers at Springfield Park some time at the end of the 1950s or early 60s? Is there a website where you can find old match programmes?
Many thanks
Nicky
