About 10 years ago Joe related to me when as a young player he broke into the first team before the war,and in his first match won over 50 of the 60 plus scrums ( Yes over 60; a different game in those days) And was then dropped for the next game

These were both great players in their different ways but together they were probably the very best in the business. My father who played alongside these "youngsters" as they were developing would tell me that packing down as loose forward with these two "up front" was a pleasure, the scrum would be rock solid (and by default much easier on the old ears) than if anyone else was playing up front. Joe joined Wigan in 1937 and Ken signed, unbelievably, in 1933 as a youngster, it took him years before he broke through as a permanent fixture. They both played (alongside my father and Jim Sullivan) in the 1938 winning Lancashire Cup team.
