Left to right, George Roughley, Jack Cunliffe, Frank Barton, -?- , Ken Gee and Martyn Ryan. Probably no earlier than 1947. My understanding was that a certain Wigan Director, don’t know his name but he was very “canny”, was responsible for building up this training pitch by tipping hardcore on this land over the years, commenting that it will be worth something in the future, that is apart from a training venue for the team. How shrewd he was, isn’t Tesco now occupying this spot of land. The great Ken Gee was noted for holding the scrum “rock-steady” if you look at his legs you can see why.
I doubt it is in the field behind spion cop.It is in the late forties .George Roughley, a Warrington lad was signed about 1948/9. In the war the area was an old quarry and filled in after.
The old quarry was further on, "behind" the fence, this was the "space" between, which had been filled in. To the left out, of shot, the Girls' High School, and the rear of the houses in Colin Street backing on to the edge of the quarry with Douglas Road at the T junction to it.
I think the player with the different shirt is Harry Street.
He signed for Wigan in the early 50's
