Whilst looking for the Wigan v Roanne programme in my collection, I came across this rarity. A programme for a game played on Christmas day 1947.
This was the first game of three played on consecutive days. Boxing Day v St.Helens, and the following day Saturday the 27th against Workington.
No doubt the players had worked up to Christmas Eve too.
Today's players have just been to Florida for WARM WEATHER TRAINING.....

My father played for Wigan in all these matches, the team remained virtually unchanged apart from two changes in the third match. Fixture congestion? they don't come much more congested than this.

fascinated me this Ron – as they did ring a bell
i have the Wigan V Roanne game from May 21st 1949 and the Wigan v Salford Christmas Day fixture of 1951
As regards the Xmas fixture, they played Saints away the day after on the Wednesday, and then played at Whitehaven on the Saturday!
don’t think they moaned about fixture congestion!!
As regards the Xmas day fixture when did these fixtures finish and what kinds of crowds did they used to get?
