This is an "Ironic" picture. Martin Ryan was credited with changing Rugby League full-back play from the traditional kicking style to the running style which is still played to this day.

Thats' correct. He was the very first full back to link up with the threequarter line, thus getting rid of the 'kicking duels' that occurred before and still do in Rugby Union.
