I was ask to upload this photo by a very good friend of mine, Mr John Miller of Aspull, of the team at Springfield Park in the 1950s ,the gentleman on the right standing is Fred Latham,Johns father,in-law.Can you name the team?.

I recognise Allan Brown (he has the ball at his feet) the ex-Blackpool and Scottish International. It can't be the 50's since Allan was appointed player manager in 1963 and left in 1966.

Sorry, but I can't name them all but I'll have a go.

Back row, Wilf Birkett (Trainer), ?, Alan Halsall, Roy Wilkinson, Alf Craig, ?, Derek Houghton, Dave Crompton, ?
Les Campbell, John Ryan, Harry Lyon, Allan Brown (Player Manager), Walter Stanley,

It certainly isn't the 50s - that's a 1960s kit - probably between 1964 and 1967

Close Ticsmon, but a couple of additions. It's Ralph Gubbins next to Alf Craig and it's Dennis (not Dave)Crompton. It's Carl Davenport(not John Ryan)and it's the 1964-65 season when Lyon and Davenport scored a load of goals. Great photo!

Your probably right with the 60s date I think its a typing error on my part,I was putting a few photos on at the time thanks.

Why is Bert Llewellyn not on this photo?.Does anyone know who the kid at the front is?.I seem to remember that Allan Brown took John Ryan(who for some reason is'nt on the photo)to Luton Town when he left Latics.

Comment by: Ticsmon on 22nd January 2012 at 21:03

So, what season would it be. I don't recall Ralph Gubbins and vaguely remember Carl Davenport (hence the error).

Wilf Birkett was working as a haulage hand down No2 pit at Stones when I started work there in 1949. At that time I think that he was playing for Southport.

Comment by: George Chilvers on 23rd January 2012 at 16:10

Bert Llewellyn wasn't with the club in 1964/65, he joined in teh Summer of 1965.

Thanks George that explains it.This photo must have been taken
when I first started watching Latics.I have been hooked ever since.I never dreamed they would ever play in the top division. What a journey!.

Hi,

I'm trying to find some information out about a goalkeeper of Wigan Athletic named Alfred Ricketts who kept goal in and around the late 1950s and early 1960s.
I'd be grateful for any information.
Thanks in anticipation.

Nice to see my Uncle Fred Latham's photograph with Wigan Athletic in 1956, he would be so proud of where they are now. From John Edwards, Llanddulas, North Wales

Caroline sent me an email to ron@wiganworld.co.uk and I'll see what I can find out about your dad.

Comment by: Jeffrey ROURKE on 2nd November 2018 at 22:29

In answer to Caroline Ryan's question - I have Eric Ryan playing 20 games (15 lge) at both right and left full back in season 1958/59.

I believe it is Allan Brown's team around 1964. The player to the left of Harry Lyon is Carl Davenport. Bert Llewellyn replaced him the following year.

Comment by: Andrew jackson on 20th February 2020 at 18:22

It’s the 1964/65 season. The man next to the trainer is my grandfather, Les Jackson. Who was the chairman in the mid sixties

Comment by: Jon Shepherd on 14th July 2020 at 23:31

Hi, my dad was Eric Forsyth Shepherd who I believe captained Wigan Athletic in the 50s/60s. Do you by any chance have any information or photos of him in the archives? He passed away a few years ago aged 81 he was born on 24/10/36.

Kind regards

Jon Shepherd

Alf Craig joined Wigan from Cambridge City in 1964. I run the FB group ‘Cambridge City FC-The Milton Road Years’. Can anyone tell me Alf’s date of birth please? I know he sadly died 30/7/2007.
Alf is a City legend, and a member of their greatest ever team in 62/63.
