Ashby and Hunslet's Brian Gabbitas both won the Lance Todd Trophy for man of the match.
The Lance Todd Trophy was shared this year,between Wigan's Ray Ashby (Full Back)and Hunslet's Brian Gabbitas (Stand Off)I was told about this match,it was well before my time.I think you went to it Malc,is it the same day or night as Clay got knocked down by Cooper.
Hi Jem. I think the Cooper/Clay fight was the following year, the day that Wigan lost to St Helens after that ridiculous and unprecedented two-match ban on Colin Clarke. Murphy's offside tactics changing the face of rugby league forever!
You are correct, Jed, we went straight from Wembley to Highbury Arsenals ground to watch the fight.Cooper knocked Clay down but mysteriously Clays glove was damaged and it was about 2 minutes before the next round started, giving Clay time to recover and he knocked Cooper out in the next round.What a farce.
The fight you're on about, Alan, was in June 1963. The second fight between Cooper and the then Ali was on the night of May 22nd, 1966, the same day Wigan lost to Saints. You must have gone to the fight straight after the Saints debacle!
