Apart from his weightlifting and wrestling, his “jobs” included being a circus acrobat, a marionette show proprietor, a member of a minstrel group, an Instructor in the Navy, a soldier and a miner.
One further job earned him the distinction of being the first person in Wigan ever to operate a cinema reel. Over and above all that, he was also awarded the DCM at Gallipoli in WW1 rising to the rank of Company Sergeant Major. Gallipoli was a “hell hole” and one of our great disasters of WW1. And to think that some of today’s 20+ something “celebrities” are busy “publishing” their autobiographies!
A photograph of him alongside the 1929 Wigan squad was recently posted by Ron Hunt. My own father who signed for Wigan RL in 1938 remembered Thomas well, I believe he was referred to as “Tom ‘Carty”, by the 30’s I think he may have been Wigan’s “Skipman”.
Sorry, Thomas's CV should have included his clog dancing and a spell as a professional ghost!
His "career" as a professional ghost is intriguing, I wonder if this formed part of a spiritualist meeting or whether the musical hall was the venue. Interesting character.
Thomas McCarthy was my grandfather. Where can I find out more information. Kind regards.
I believe that Thomas maybe my great grandfather, as my father was one of four sons (twins Thomas and Morris) and Terrance, and Marilyn and Nellie my father came from Norley Hall and was born near Wigan little theatre
Yes, judging by what you've said, Thomas McCarthy would also be your grandfather. See my comments under Communicate,People,Thomas McCarthy.
Hi yes totally agreed, in my younger years I often asked my Auntie Nel about your Mum, yourself and from memory you have a sister ? Having never met you it was hard to understand why we hadn't met as full cousins.
Craig. My email address is laurencemccarthy@hotmail.com so we can carry on the conversation away from a public forum. Regards.
