The thing I will forever remember about this fellow (apart from him prancing round O’Hara in 85 at Wembley & commentator Alex Murphy exclaiming ‘Did he want to score that try’) was the fact that most of the tries that he scored he made himself, very few were ‘put on a plate ‘ for him.
Brilliant winger
Legend has it that shortly after arriving in Wigan to re-open the Pier in 1986 (also a few months ahead of Prince Andrew's marriage), one local dignatory asked HM The Queen "....and what does maam think of Fergie?". "Best winger since Boston" came the reply! :o)
This was one very, very special player who only come along in a generation or two, if you're lucky.
Here for just a short time but he and Brett Kenny made it a very special time. Two world class players that only come along very rarely.
John Ferguson, a truly gifted winger. Whilst he wasn't particularly fast, the gift he had was to get to his 'top speed' in one step . He was 'quick off the mark' and his sidestep was sublime. We only see players of the calibre of John Ferguson and Brett Kenny in a generation if your lucky.
