I believe at the time they visited the track in 1947, they were appearing, for two weeks, at the Palace Theatre Manchester. The owner of the track, had some connection with the owners of the Palace Theatre. Who arranged for the two to appear at the track that night as they had the night off.
UPDATE It wasn't Manchester they were appearing it was Bolton
