Wigan had won the Lancashire 10 days earlier by beating Rochdale 21 - 5, and this was the first match at home since the final which was played at Salford's Weaste ground and the first opportunity to show the cup to their fans.
Lewis Bradley, seated on ground, extreme left, died in the First World War. He was a driver in the Royal Field Artillery.
He played for Wigan from 1911 to 1914 and scored a remarkable 90 tries in 83 matches. Although signed while playing for a Welsh side he was born in Ruardean, Woodside, Glos., he died on June 20th 1918 aged 29.
The Walford in the photo was a relation of mine,he lived in Woodhouse Lane or Ingram St not quite sure.First photo i've seen of him
Hi Frank, I have a small article (no photos) which sums up Frank's career. I'll send it to you if you wish. He played for Wigan 1911 to 1924, scored 104 tries and kicked 3 goals. He shared a benefit match with Charlie Seeling and Percy Coldrick in 1925. When he was 16 he had trials with Preston N.E.and he also played for Chorley. It was said he never had a bad game for Wigan.
thanks for that Keith, appreciate it whats the best way for you to send it E/mail or what
OK Frank as soon as I have your email address I'll send it on.
Correction, Frank Walford made 109 appearances, scored 39 tries and kicked 3 goals.
Hi Keith my E/mail address is fwalford@hotmail.co.uk
Many thanks Frank. I've sent the e-mails which include two cartoons.
You can just make out the old wooden cover that was put up on the Spion Kop end in 1910.
