This is the Wigan team that faced Hunslet on Wednesday August 30th 1939, just 4 days before the second World War was declared. The players were fully aware of the circumstances and the 7 Welshmen in the team realised that they would probably be shortly going back home to Wales to await their call-up, this may explain their rather stern expressions.
They won the match 18 points to 5 and played the last game of the abandoned season on the Saturday against Swinton, the day before war was declared.
The team was, back row left to right, Ossie Jones (he only played 7 games for Wigan), Ike Jones (both Welsh), a very young Joe Egan, George Banks (a Yorkshireman who at that time was keeping a young Ken Gee out of the side), Percy Moxey (who died in a bomber crash in 1942), Eddie Watkins and my father Jack Bowen, (these last three all Welshmen).
Seated, Ted Ward (Welsh) Harry Sunderland (Australian) Jim Sullivan (Welsh), Jim Entwistle (Chairman) Ted ? Williamson, Johnny Lawrenson.
In front, ? Jackson (played 7 times for 1st team scoring 6 tries) and a young Tommy Bradshaw.

Great team photo. Help with names. Dennis Williamson, 1937-1939 (winger) and Jim Jackson 1935-1941 (winger).

Thank you artful for help with the names. The Ian Morrison book has a JD Williams which I'm assuming is Dennis Williamson, (one of the few mistakes I've found in Ian's book on the history of Wigan RLFC 1895-1986.) Dennis came from the North east of England, possibly the Newcastle Club, if he was a Geordie then I'm not aware of any others who played for Wigan.

Lovely to see the history of my great Uncle Ted Watkins. A proud history of a Caerphilly born player. 1935 played against the all blacks for Wales aged 19 and stayed with Cardiff before changing codes to rugby league.

Lovely to see a photo of my Great Uncle Ossie Jones in Wigan colours.

I will always remember him telling me how Treherbert RFC banned him “sine die” from even drinking in the clubhouse for joining Wigan. Then in 1995 asked him to re-join the club. He politely declined!!!
