Looks as if this could be the preparation for the 1950 Championship play off against Huddersfield, played at Maine Road, which Wigan won 20 points to 2, despite being without 7 of their regular players who were on their way to Australia with the GB Touring party.
Was this their training pitch I wonder. It was behind the "Spion Kop" and now the Tesco store is built on it. Anyone know?
Correction it couldn't have been the Championship play-off Final of 1950 since this took place in May and the photo caption says Dec 2nd 1950, however, the only players I can identify here are, Jack Cunliffe (kneeling), Johnny Alty (next to Jim Sullivan) and possibly Jack Broome and Frank Barton.
Ted Slevin, Ronnie Mather, Ken Gee are also on the picture. If the date is correct the match between Rochdale Hornets was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. You could get to the training pitch from the Swinley lane area.
