Aitch, I couldn't think of Alans name but I do know he lived in one of the houses on Ince Green Lane just past George Street. They were a very nice family.
Irene Roberts(Griffiths) should know him because she lived just a few doors down from him

Top row first right I think is Richard Johnson

I remember Alan Hart but wouldn't have recognised him from the photo. If it's the Alan Hart who lived near me, I believe he now lives somewhere near (but not in) Careless Lane. His parents were Hilda and Joe and he had a sister, Doreen.

P.s.....Evelyn, the more I look at him, I think it IS Alan; I remember him with his hair combed back in a "Quiff" as we used to call it, but his face is very familiar. Is there anyone who knows him who could ask him to verify?

Comment by: Alan Hart on 5th February 2010 at 15:44

I am the person second from the left

Hello Alan! How are you? Irene.

Alan, you are probably wondering how I know where you live. I have a friend in London, Neil Cain, whose Grandad owned Cain's cake shop in Belle Green Lane before it was Ashurst's. Neil is still in touch with one of the Ashurst's daughters, Valeie Critchley, in Careless Lane. He often visits her on his Wigan visits and took me to meet her last year, which is when I learned that you lived nearby .I remember you and your Mam and Dad and your Doreen so well, and I described your house in an article I wrote for Past Forward some years ago, called "The Dream".....I may not have got it spot-on but the memory plays tricks over the years! Alan, I don't suppose you have any photos of your house or of our row, do you? Or of the backs? I would be grateful if I could borrow them if you have. I hope you and yours are well and wish you all the best for 2010. Irene.

Front row, second from right, is James (Jimmy) Gambles. The man behind Jimmy with a light cardigan is John (Johnny) Teasdale. Both Jimmy and Johnny were full time World War 2 firemen in the AFS then NFS. They served in the Manchester and Liverpool Blitz. After the war they both continued in Lancashire County Fire Brigade until retirement. Johnny was later a courier with Norweb Electricity and James, a Fire & Security supervisor with Gullick Dobson/Parks Forge.
Back row second from right is Derek Traynor. Derek was a Sunday School teacher at Ince Central. He was a dental technician who was also one of the last National Servicemen. He married Carol Woods who became a Sister at Wigan Infirmary.

Is that the same Carol woods that lived in the Bush hotel up Belle green lane in the 50s/60s

Comment by: Maureen Rutter (nee Green) on 28th February 2010 at 22:05

Yes Gerry it is the same Carol Woods. Also I think the third man from the right in the dark suit holding the cup is Joe Holland who used to live in Pennington Lane

Which church is this?

Does anybody know what happened to the vicar? Did he have any family?

I believe he was my great uncle.
