The hardest of the three so far –and no I am NOT the founder member of the Jimmy Hornby fan club – he just so happens to on all three pictures – never mind a free pint in ‘Sams Bar’ for a full named team – get this by 5pm Wednesday and I will streak round ‘Sams Bar’!! Where are you ‘primroseandblue’ you charlatan you?

Straightway I recognize Bill Francis and Peter Smethurst on the back row and David Hill, Jimmy Hornby and Terry Cassidy on the front row.

Is it 73/74 season is that Bill Ashurst 8th back row?

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 15th July 2009 at 13:33

not Bill Ashurst JM - all at St. Judes should recognise the bloke with the ball!!!

Comment by: 1934granada on 15th July 2009 at 14:18

Tough one this Malc. Extreme left back row is Tony Karalius. Fifth from the left back row is Brian Gregory. I recognise quite a few on here but names elude me! I'll see if I can put names to faces

Granada - Karalius is right - but its not Gregory - it is a toughy - looks like i will be keeping my clothes on!

Yes it is

Comment by: Broady on 15th July 2009 at 17:12

Could that be Alan Farrington 5th from left on the back row and maybe Chris Fuller next to Jimmy Hornby?

Comment by: Standish Gus on 15th July 2009 at 17:21

Front row second from the right is John Whittle. I've come to the conclusion that this must be an "A" team match as there are too many first team players of this era absent. For example Hogan, Willicombe, Vigo, Wright, Ashcroft and Irving etc. Maybe it could have been taken when there was a first team players strike. Either way its a tough one.

Comment by: Scholes Malc on 16th July 2009 at 21:03

well done 1934granada - it is indeed the 'A' team - but thats not Johnny Whittle - a couple of well known faces not been nmaed yet though.....

Hello my late father Jack Reid Brierley played for Wigan. I am just wondering if you have any further information or any photos of his time playing for Wigan. He was born 3/7/1927 thanking you in advance

Comment by: Keith on 12th April 2022 at 13:40

Hi Jacqueline, I can’t find a Jack R Brierley who may have played for Wigan but a certain J Brierley was at Rochdale.
