A great action photograph of Wigan's own 'Roy of the Rovers' Harry Lyon, scoring one of his three goals against Doncaster Rovers in the F.A. Cup 1st round replay played on Monday afternoon, because at that time the ground had no floodlights, November 17th 1965. In front oof 7,000 people. Wigan won the game 3-1. After Harry, who had been carried from the field on a stretcher, returned to score a hat trick.
That's how legends are made.................

Went to All Saints School, Wouldnt let us out early to go , Graham Pye bunked the day off. Was miffed because Rugby played Warrington in a Challenge cup match (also Wed afternoon) same season and anyone going could have the afternnon off to go. But it was a rugby school

I remember this well me and my mate jimmy macmyler skipped class at wigan tech, to see this game I recall they had a player named alec or alex jeffery playing for them who was going to be the man to watch, but harry put paid to that.

One of those "I was there when..." to tell the grandkids. Also went to the previous Saturday game when we drew at Doncater despite having a man carried (days before subs) - Crompton scoring the equaliser from a corner, I think. Don't want to be too picky but I would bet on this being a Wednesday afternoon replay as we (6th form) had sports on Weds at Ashton Grammar School and the head allowed us to book an Evesway's coach to take us to the game instead - unheard off but I'm glad I was there. Perfect hat trick too - one with the left, one with the right and one with the head. Or is that just how legends grow? Living in Scotland now but latics is still the first result I look for.

I missed school and went with my next door neighbour. Big crowd that day. I was to small to see so the, men lifted me up and sat me on a fence next to the tea bar opposite the main stand. Great day and a great hat trick from Harry Lyon.
