Looks a bit like Ian Purdie - so I'll take a crack at Oct 28, 1978 - 3 days before my 11th birthday - Latics first league penalty kick goal vs. NTFC
I'm with toronto_latic, first league goal from a penalty.
28/10/1978 Northampton Town H Won 2-0 6,264 Purdie 2(1 pen)
Purdie scoring a penalty is hardly a "what happened next". That first season Latics were awarded six penalties, Jeff Wright scoring one and Ian Purdie scoring four. Purdie missed a penalty that season and looking at the goalies position this could be it, but I cant for the life of me remember who the opposition was.
Right I am going to have a stab at Ian Purdie having a penalty saved against Grimsby 23rd August 1978. Latics losing 3-0 att.9,227, Purdies penalty coming when Latics were 2-0 down.
Hmm that would have been the Latics first home game in the football league - on a Wednesday night to boot. I don't remember Grimsby or Northamptons away strips but red seems plausible for both.
It looks more like a Saturday in October than a Wednesday night in August - but you never can tell with summers in England!
Come on Ivor put us out of our misery:-)
W.P. was "spot on" while poor old Purdie was "spot off"! He missed this penalty against Grimsby when Latics were 0-2 down.
