Wigan directors, players and background staff seen here at Central Park around 1940. Wigan continued to play throughout the war years when many local lads came through to develop their skills and become regulars in the side after the war. This gave the Wigan team a very strong local input which was in contrast to the decade earlier the 1930's when it was quite common for 7, 8 or more players in the team to be of Welsh origin or from overseas.
Standing, left to right, Hesketh (director), unknown but definitely a local lad, Johnny Lawrenson, Jack Cunliffe, Martyn Ryan, all locals who were first team players after the war, Hermus Llewellyn ( a Welsh visitor, Hermus later died in North Africa during the war), Joe? Jones (director).
Front, left to right, Parkes (trainer) Tommy Bradshaw, another local star and unknown, but was a member of the background staff.
