The Isherwoods Shop
The Isherwoods Shop

A photo of two of the Isherwood brothers, Roger (on left) and behind him James Lawrence, in front of their shop. I believe this was in Greenough Street although they were situated in other shops at different times. I was fascinated to see the reflection of the policeman caught in the shop window reflection (and a church in the other?) with his hands on hips, not looking too pleased. Cannot name the couple next to the brothers, parents perhaps?

That’s the shop I remember. The same clogs and shoes must have been in the window for donkey’s years. The paintings were changed more often. I remember an old woman wrapped in a shawl and a pit man. There was also a nude if I remember correctly and I think it was supposed to be Princess Margaret but not quite sure about that.

With the slope of the road I think this is Greenough Street. If it was the Darlington St. shop the slope would be in the opposite direction.

The A5238 is Chapel/Poolstock Lane, where it crosses the A577, Wallgate/Darlington Street, according to the signpost?

Re the mirrored images Keith....I think the photographer can be seen in the glass to the left of the man in the white overall ?

The policeman who is reflected in the window reminds me of Dixon of Dock Green saying "Goodnight All" at the end of the programme. That is a very interesting photo; sadly I didn't know Scholes well and photos of it fascinate me. I remember GORDON Isherwood's shoe shop down Wallgate, just before Wigan North Western Station.

Look at item 30327
It’s definitely Greenough St I walked past that shop many, many times.

The shop is Leyland's, maybe they only just took it over or sold it?

The shop on Darlington St had an entrance on the corner. The building is still there albeit new frontage.

Helen of Troy, yes well spotted, cannot determine if it is a cameraman or camerawoman.

I think the church, which is also in reflection is on the other window, is the Welsh Presbyterian Chapel which in the 1880’s had Rev. J. R. Evans as its minister. In 1938 I know that a number of Welsh born Wigan RL players (Wigan had no fewer than 16 on their books that also included my father) used to attend.

Veronica- yes it's definitely Greenhough Street. Walked past it many times going into Wigan and indeed to Central Park. And yes those picture were in the shop in the window bay on the right. You are also right about the Darlington Street East shop. I was at WGS with Clive Isherwood in the 1960s. Clive was the son of Gordon and after leaving school Clive was the manager of the Darlington St shop.

I do remember the ‘church’ building in the reflection but I don’t know anything at all about it. It was just past the Doctor’s surgery.

I wonder if there was a Male Voice choir at the church. I love hearing the Welsh singers I have a few DVD’s with the most famous songs.

Not much information online about this Welsh Chapel.

Pity that there are no photos, as yet, of the church building on Greenough Street, as there is a bit of information of the Welsh Chapel that was at Ashton by Wigan Buildings.

Just seen a photo on another site of Lily Isherwood and concluded that is definitely her in this photo.
