Found this photo of my dad as a young man presumably when he started work as an apprentice joiner.I have his deed of apprenticeship which says he worked for William Healey Lowe (trading as John Johnson of Caroline Street, Wigan). I don’t know who the two gentlemen are in the photo . Perhaps someone might recognise them. Could the one on the right be the ‘boss’?

Your dad looks a rum ‘un Graham. It’s a great pity that apprenticeships are not as available as they used to be. I remember lads who were apprentices and they didn’t have much money at the time. But it would have been worth it once they qualified. At first glance I thought he was leaning on one of those vaulting contraptions we used to have at school. I wonder what it is.

It could be one of those flat barrows for wooden boxes Veronica, I am sure I saw them years ago in the Old Covent Garden Market when flowers, mainly chrysanths, were sent there in long wooden boxes .

At first I thought it was a Pommel Horse, then a Chest of Drawers. Whatever it is, it looks to be held together with bolts.
Nice picture Graham, perhaps you can help out identifying the object?

I don’t have any idea what it is dads leaning against. I too thought it was a vaulting horse at first but I’ve changed my mind now. If it’s a flat board of some description then the two gentlemen standing behind don’t seem to be bearing any weight so it must be self supporting. Anyway it’ll probably remain a mystery. Tommy, thanks for your kind words about dad. Can you believe it’s 27 years ago this month that he died.

Graham, clearly I don't know a Pommel from a Vault.
I meant Vaulting Horse of course.

it is a flat bed trolley used to transport lengths of timber around a timber yard
