According to “BoxRec” Jack was a featherweight, had 14 professional bouts. Lost 8, Won 5, Drew 1. Lived in Hulme, does not state where he was born. Started his career Dec. 7th 1931, last bout Dec. 8th 1935.

Wigan Mick's Bike's Crossbar (????)'s link is the correct Jack Dunn. If he was a "10st champion" he would have been 'welterweight'.
Going off his record, I can't see how he would be challenging Gt. Britain.

Wigan was famous for producing world class great boxers and wrestlers, there must have been something in the local water other than lead!

Colin, this boxer was Scottish and certainly not world class, whatever that may mean.

George, I cannot vouch for where he was born but there is no doubting that he is billed as 'The WIGAN Lightweight'.
Regardless, the Wigan area did produce many top class Boxers and Wrestlers. I recall around 1970 one well known boxer who was well retired by then (I think he lived in Golborne) being pointed out to me in the Hare & Hounds on the corner of Church Lane and Stone Cross Lane Lowton St Mary's.

Then why couldn’t Jack Dunn be a Wigan boxer who came from Glasgow?
Win or lose, he had a go at it, but his record doesn’t show him as a champion - unless those links are wrong.

Getting back to my posting about the Golborne Boxer that I last saw in the Hare & Hounds, it was Peter Kane known as the Golborne Blacksmith. Although born in Heywood he grew up in Golborne and was an English Boxer in the 1930's.
100 fights, 89 wins 54 of which KO.
Beginning his career as Peter Cain, legend has it that this was changed to Kane following a misprint on a fight billing in Blackpool. He thought it sounded more like a boxer's name and the new spelling stuck.
He won the world fly-weight championship in 1938 by outboxing American Jackie Jurich with only one sound hand -- later he had to have the little finger on his hand amputated.
I believe he has a son living in Appley Bridge. He also has a square named after him in Golborne.
You can always Google for more Info'. And no whinging please that Golborne is not Wigan!

I knew Peter. He was a friend of my dad and the last time I saw him was at my dad’s funeral in ‘86. I have lots of programmes and bills of some of his fights. He trained my dad, who had the same manager in Blackpool (a crook by all measures).
Now then, you won’t like the next bit. Peter was no fan of Wigan, or Wiganers. He never associated himself with the place and neither did my dad. Golborne is, and always will be, Golborne, not Wigan. Take that as you will.
Other local associates were Frank Fallon (Ashton), Eric Billington (Golborne, Dickie Davies (Ashton), Emmet Kenny (Haydock), Chris Rafferty (Burtonwood), to name a few.
Re ‘Wigan’ boxer, some fighters had their licence registered at their home but some would be entered and billed from their respective gyms, some from their manager.
