I remember a cycle shop over the road from here, I think that was Tom Hughes.
Peter, Tom Hughes cycle shop was on Mesnes St, his late son Tom ran the shop in the 40's and 50's. I lived about 200 yds from young Tom in Standish. Old Tom was a famous cyclist in his day, if you go to WW, People, Tom Hughes, you will be able to read about him.
Ironically the lad that worked for him in his shop for years lived behind Barrie who uploaded the photo. There is a photo of young Tom and his assistant on the above WW site.
When I was about nine years old my first two wheel bike came from Tom Hughes shop in Wallgate. By the time I was ready for my second one it was a Rudge with drop down handlebars and a Sturmey Archer gear change and came from Tom Hughes in Mesnes St.
The shop I remember was opposite Briggs tyres on Wallgate or near there.
I must apologise Peter, i didn't realise that there had been a Tom Hughes shop in that area.
Was the cycle shop on Chapel Lane also a Tom Hughes' or did it belong to someone else who was also a keen cyclist and racer, he could be seen when a lot older too still out and about riding a three wheeler.
What is that in the sky on the photo.
Cyril - Jack Watson had the Chapel Lane bike shop.
Item #: 32172 in the album is a pic of him outside the premises.
The young lad in the shop was Harry Freeman , young Tom’s cousin. I am Young Toms daughter and my grandad was Tom Hughes the cyclist ax was my great grandad, ‘Owd Tom’.
Eddie, that object in the sky is a UFO, there were a lots of sightings in Wigan at the time shrouded in smoke but usually in pubs just before closing time!
Who had the cycle shop at the bottom of Greenough Street near Central Park?
