I bought this lovely photograph in a shop in the Netherlands today. On the back it reads:
Two English beauties: who said diamonds are a girls best friends? If you were to ask five-year old Elaine Hitchmouth (spelled like that) who her best friend was, she would certainly say “my dog Bess”. These two close companions were seen in a park in Wigan, Lancashire.

What a lovely photo! I remember having my hair like that as a small child in the 1950s, parted on the side and held with a ribbon bow. I loved my little dog too, but he was a mongrel called Vic. I hope Elaine and Bess had many happy years growing up together.
