Christine, My Father-in-law was Herbert (Bert) Martlew, born
in 1899, passed away 1963. I have heard the name Leah many
times and also Frank Gaskell. Who are the rest of the people
in the picture ? Regards, Ray.
I know a Steven Martlew whom looks very similar to the child on the far left. I know this is not Steve given the date but it could be some relation of his because there does seem to be a resemblance.
This I don't know Ray,the middle one looks like Leah and the card is to auntie, my grandmother, her and my grandad were Leahs cousins by her marriage to Frank gaskell. I'm trying to find out who they are. The martlew family were large and they are pictured on the first photo.my photo was dated 1923.
Looking again the date could be 1928if it is then the child on Leah's knee could be Margaret who was born beginning of march,1927
Christine,Thank you for your post.If you look at the Martlew
Family in the People section of a few years ago, it brings back memories. My wife Margaret, nee Martlew has racked her
brains and has come up with 4 marriages of what she thinks
are the daughters of Leah. Kathleen married Billy Holt,
Lillian married Norman Prescott, Margaret married Geoff
Sanderson, and Barbara married Albert Hardman. Albert and
Barbara lived in Holt Street, Orrell. Albert Hardman was a
lay preacher, and conducted our marriage ceremony at the
Independent Methodist Church in Loch Street. I am intrigued
with the address on the postcard, it looks like 584 Rosehill
Avenue, Pemberton, which suggests it was a much longer road
than it is nowadays, before Norley Hall was built in the 1950s. Ray.
A handsome crew, there, Christine. Pretty sure that I've seen a stone tablet bearing the name Rose Hill and set on the upper regions of a house just beyond the Halfway House in Pem'. Just curious.
Hi Ray, Leah and Frank had three daughters, Margaret 1927, Lilian 1929,and kathleen 1930.they had a son Harold who died in 1924 aged 11weeks, there is no mention of a Barbara. Kathleen and William are the ones who live in Holt st. orrell.
584 rose hill is actually ormskirk Rd, just further down from Enfield st.it was called rose hill and is where my mother was born
Ray,so your wife Margaret is George Martlews daughter then?he married Mary Gaskell. Frank Gaskell who married Leah was mum's cousin, don't think Mary and Frank were related.
Phillip, yes Rose Hill (ormskirk Rd)was just further down from Enfield st.there is a photo of it on here somewhere.
Christine, Thank you for your comments. Margarets Dad was
Herbert Martlew, 1899-1963, he was into farming as a young
man and worked at Walker Bros, at Pagefield Works, who later
became Walmesleys in his later days. I assumed that 584 Rose Hill was Ormskirk Road.
Hi Ray so James 1870 and George 1861 were brothers. George was Leahs father and James was Herbert's father. Remember dad talking about Arthur martlew,Builder? Kathleen and William Holt are apparently still around. I remember the martlew girls very well. Lilians daughter Gillian had a baby in chorley hospital where I was a midwife. They visited mum quite often. Was Gillian's husband any relation to you, the name Smyth is the same
Sorry Margaret's daughter gillian not lilians daughter.
I Have just made the link between the Sharrock family and the Martlew family. My grandfather's (Joseph Sharrock)Aunt Mary (sharrock) married George Martlew, who became a fishmonger. I hope I have done my research correctly.
