A scene of Wigan long gone, it was worthwhile going to the town centre to shop then, and you also had to go along to the big Tudor house to pay your eletricity bill.
Another picture with a lot 'going on' but that was how it was so much busyness in those days - it's hard to believe now...
The building with the dome on top. At the base, in the fifties, wasn’t, there a music shop. I have a recollection of a relation of mine buying a record there. He put the record down to pay for it. Unfortunately he had placed it on a radiator, which caused the record to bend.
I may have got my location wrong. I believe the music shop was on the corner of Mesnes Street. The street on the left, is it Diicconson Street?.
The shop with the dome was on the corner of Dicconson St, Albert.
For many years it was Bill Davies's 'Square Deal Shop', which sold hardware, and kitchen and bathroom fittings.
Mick LD Can you remember a music shop, on the corner of Mesnes Street, in the fifties?. It may have still been there in the sixties. The name Chamberlain seems to stir a memory
Chamberlains is correct, Albert. They later moved further up Standishgate, to the property adjoining the Griffin pub.
Been gone a good few years now.
Thank you Mick. That was the shop where my relation bent his record..
The Tudor style building on the left was the old Electric Showrooms when I was at school
